Henry had a brother named Peter Van Schaack, who is possibly the recipient of this letter.

Note on verso, "One of my Philadelphia papers is mislaid - I cannot find it."

The flag was carried in this battle by the 28th Mass. In the upper right on a crest, Marye's house can be discerned (with the columns).
