References a letter from Mrs. Kerby from Antigua, and sends it to Lucy for her amusement (see GLC02437.05882). Asks Lucy to send some muslin for handkerchiefs. Mentions her children and various family members. Is thankful that Henry Knox has recovered. Has heard Lucy is fat and tall now and "I expect to be a shrimp by you." Says Madge is still confined to her room. Has written to Antigua for another servant and means to send her back before next winter.

Provides a list of payments made to the 10 employees of the War Department for the second quarter of 1793. A total of $1,695.18 was paid out on 2 July. All the employees except Secretary Knox signed the document, saying they received their money. The document notes Knox has a salary of $3,000 per annum and his chief clerk makes $800 per annum. The assistant clerks make $500 per annum, while the messenger makes $250. Signed by John Stagg, Constant Freeman, Jr., Benjamin Bankson, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Henry Laugier, David Henley, Jacob Hoffman, and Frederick Sprig.

Says "It is extremely important to me to complete immediately the purchase of this estate if it can be done with due security to myself." Believes Lane and Winslow are in Boston to complete the deal. Written to Lucy Knox, the daughter of Henry and Lucy Knox. Page two also has an appended note from Henry Jackson Knox, the son of Lucy and Henry. The note is signed by Henry and says "love to all." Sarah writes that the family is well. Was shocked to read about the death of Mrs. Lear and her child in the newspaper (a reference to Mary "Polly" Long Lear, who had married Tobias Lear in 1790, and died in the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia). Says General Jackson delivered her letter of 2 July. Sends news of local engagements.

Provides a breakdown of the War Department's salaries for the third quarter of 1793. Includes the salaries for Henry Knox, John Stagg, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Laugier, Jacob Hoffman, William Burton, and Frederick Sprig. The total amount of the salaries is $1546.47. Knox received $750 for three months as Secretary of War. He made a total of $3,000 for the year. Page two is dated 2 October and has the signatures of all the War Department employees, except Knox, stating they received their pay.

Reports that the cold and marching has made Mr. Vesey ill. Tells of their travels in Maine and their high expenses thus far. Says "the Inhabitants are extravigent [sic] in their demands, they take ever[y] advantage of us knowing that we must submit, for we cannot proceed on without their assistance - from this state of act please to inform me, must I proceed on at this great expence of more than 4 Dolls pr day when on business, and as much when detaind by Mr Vesey Ill health." Continues letter on 1 November and says Vesey is still weak, but believes he can procure a horse today.

Reports on Mr. Vesey's health. Says Vesey was so ill that they took a small craft to Thomaston and that Captain Vose thought it best for them to remain a few days. Continues letter on 8 November and says Vesey is better. Reports he has spent 70 dollars thus far. Says it will take 20 fair days to complete "the business," which appears to be something to do with squatters on Knox's Maine lands. Believes he will need another 50 dollars. Notes he is "disagreeably situated not knowing what to do."

Marked as "an Exact Copy." Signed by Woodruff 1 September 1777. Lists sergeants, corporals, matrosses, gunners, bombardiers, and drum and fifes. Includes comments, time of enlistment, and place of appointment. On verso, contains "Proof of Effectives" chart, noting officers present and absent. Lieutenants Eli Elmor and David Moore sign, certifying the authenticity of the chart. Colonel Richard Humpton, commander of the Second Brigade of General Benjamin Lincoln's Division, signs 3 September 1777.

Writes from Camp Reynolds outside Pittsburgh. Says his health is good. Comments on his "last" holidays in the army: "...we had a splendid dinner...given to us by the U.S. Christian Commission..." Reports that New Years Eve was the most lonesome day he's experienced since being in the army. Discusses the marriages of several friends back home and hopes there will be women left for them when they return from the war. Does not expect to get a furlough. Informs Joseph that he goes on guard duty every third day.
