Title: [Diary aboard the U.S.S. Nantucket]

Allen was an officer on the USS "Nantucket" during and before the bombardment of Fort Sumter. The diary appears to have been written within days of the actions. Includes manuscript pencil and ink "Sketch of Charleston Harbor and fortifications," and with his drawings of Fort Sumter after its bombardment and the ironclad USS Nantucket. An interesting table at the end lists the damage made by every mortar shot at Fort Sumter from his ship.

Title: [5 Documents pertaining to the surrender of CSS Atlanta to Union ironclads] [decimalized .01-.05]

Documenting the surrender and prisoner transfers of a Confederate ironclad steamer. Webb was commander of the CSS "Atlanta," which surrendered to Union ironclads. Documents include lists of officers and crew. The CSS "Atlanta" was an ironclad ram stationed at Savannah, Georgia until 16 June 1863 when the Commander William Webb steamed downriver to attack Union monitors in the blockade. It was run aground and forced to surrender. Webb remained a prisoner until he was exchanged on 18 October 1864. The capture was widely publicized in Northern newspapers. Dated March 20, 1863-June 25, 1863.

Title: Vessels captured within the limits of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron

Ledger book lists 42 ships captured from South Carolina to Florida with inclusive dates of October 3, 1863 to May 5, 1865. Six columns listed as: Prize (name of the vessel), Class, Whom captured, Where captured, Where sent, and Remarks. Occasionally, entries detail cargo found aboard the ship. Several are also marked "paid," probably referring to the prize money that was paid out for the captured ship. It is noted that on page 28, the vessel named Amazon had been captured from the Confederate forces. Found aboard were 11 enslaved people (unnamed in the ledger) and 84 bales of cotton.

Harding acknowledges how the "railroad situation" affects Rapp's business and indicates that he wants "the government policy to be one leading to the railway restoration" but admits a current discouraging outlook. Letter signed 18 days after his inauguration and written on White House stationery. Rapp worked for the Prendergast Company of Marion, Ohio, and was an old friend of Harding's.

Contemporary clerical copy signed by chief clerk of the War Department, John Stagg, Jr. The letters concern protection of the Virginia frontier against Indians, emphasizing President Washington's view "that all parts of the union ought to be defended at the general expense." Discusses William Blount's requests for militias, congressional authorization, and Washington's opinions on the matters. Tied with blue ribbon. Dated May 16, 1792 - 3 November 1792.

Also congratulates Colonel Varick on his actions at Poughkeepsie. Letter written in a light-hearted manner and composed at "Head Quarters." Tilghman was Washington's aide-de-camp.

Partly printed document signed by Clymer as Supervisor of the Revenue for the district of Pennsylvania attests that the duties had been paid on "one Puncheon of Rum containing one hundred & fifteen gallons..." Marked "No. 3294." Clymer served as Pennsylvania's collector of excise taxes from 1791-1794, and was in the post when the Whiskey Rebellion broke out in western Pennsylvania.

After being repulsed a day earlier at Malvern Hill, the Confederate forces are still pursuing the Union forces as they try to retreat from the Peninsula, though not nearly as vigorously as before.
