A post script, signed and dated 27 August 1798, indicates that the letter was mistakenly sent to William Simmons, an accountant for the War Department in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Addresses to both Bryant and Simmons (crossed out) are on the address leaf. Stamped free with signature of Jonathan Jackson.

Captain Bryant writes to Secretary of War Armstrong after being informed by the new superintendent that he will be dismissed from his position as Master of Ordinance and Assistant Military Storekeeper at the armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Notes that his usefulness has been reduced "by the infirmities of age," but in hopes of retaining his post, he recounts his service during the Revolution, which included losing his right arm at Fort Constitution in Fort Lee, New Jersey in 1776 and a long period as Deputy Commissary of Military Stores at the armory. This letter from Hatch to his brother in law, John Bryant, quotes a short letter, in full, from Secretary of War John Armstrong to Captain John Bryant (the recipient's father) indicating that he was being removed from his position as Master of Ordnance and Assistant Military Storekeeper at the armory in Springfield, Massachusetts because the post was no longer "necessary to the public service." Hatch adds that "Father bears it apparently pretty well, altho' his health is not quite so good as usual." Captain Bryant had asked to keep his position (see GLC03432.115).

Writes to Colonel Foster, the assistant adjutant-general of volunteers, to request that he be allowed to remain in the service in a "colored organization." Recounts his history of service in the Union Army since 1861, which included a period as a prisoner of war in Andersonville Prison. A signed endorsement by Foster appears on the verso, paving the way for an "appointment as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Colored Troops."

The drawing shows an east side view of Fort Marion, which was controlled by the Confederacy during the Civil War. On the back is a note describing the fort, it's building material (coquina) made from crushed shells and its construction by the Spanish, who completed it in 1756. The fort was originally named the Castillo de San Marcos (and renamed Fort Marion by the United States after it acquired Florida) and has served as a National Park Service site, the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, since 1924. The note is addressed to Emeline and signed "your Absent Hewsband."

Sarsons joined Company F in the 1st Regiment of New Hampshire Volunteers on 3 May 1861, under the command of Augustus S. Edgerly, and this partially printed form officially released him after a three month term of service. Describes Sarsons as a twenty five year old mechanic, 5'6" tall, with a florid complexion and hazel eyes.

Title: [Proof of an authorized furlough for Eleazer Sarsons]

Partially printed document documenting that Sarsons, the first sergeant in Company C of the 4th Regiment of the New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, was granted a month-long furlough from his duties at Morris Island, South Carolina. A note signed by Major Drew on the verso certifies that Sarsons leave followed the pertinent regulations. There are other notations on the verso, along with printed material noting the furlough was "Approved" by Brigadier General Q.A. Gilmore in the Department of the South "for good conduct in the field." Stamped twice by the quartermaster's office.

Describes Sarsons as a twenty seven year old farmer, 5'7" tall, with a light complexion and hazel eyes. A blank "Oath of Identity" form appears on the verso. Signed, but not filled in, by Lieutenant Richardson in blue ink.

Called "Special Orders No. 121." Honorably discharges Sarsons so he could "accept a commission then tendered to him by the Governor of New Hampshire." Issued "By Command of Brevet Major General Ruger." Partially printed document from the Headquarters of the Department of North Carolina, with two stamps from the auditors office, one from the treasury department, and some later notes and underlining in pink ink. Cilley was the assistant adjutant general.
