At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses administrative matters related to remitting a payment to Captain Bryant. Written from the "Supervisor's Office." A post script, signed and dated 27 August 1798, indicates that the letter was mistakenly sent to William Simmons, an accountant for the War Department in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Addresses to both Bryant and Simmons (crossed out) are on the address leaf. Stamped free with signature of Jonathan Jackson.
