McParlin asks that an original letter of introduction written by Ulysses S. Grant and sent to President Chester A. Arthur be returned to him (the original being deposited in White House files). McParlin transcribes in his own hand the text of the letter and asks that this serve as a substitute so that he can get the original back. He asked because he considered the letter, which commends his service in the Civil War, more valuable to himself and his family since Grant had recently died. McParlin sends news of himself and asks for more letters from his wife. Writes about life and work at the hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. Comments on religion, friends, and food. Has been so cold that he has been using his "buffalo robe." Troops and officers received apples from the "patriotic merchants" of New York and turkey as well for Thanksgiving. There is text loss where the year was written and elsewhere along the edges of the paper.

Jones' letter discussing John B. Marchand's "lack of zeal and restiveness" and his "hostility to my lawful authority," written in Marchand's hand. Jones discusses the insubordinate actions of Marchand and two other officers, which he says were caused by "gold mania." Says these officers opposed his orders, and then acted disrespectfully towards their superior officer. Jones' letter attacking these officers has become public, and he assures Lieutenant Armstrong that his censures were only directed towards those three officers, and not intended for other officers under his command.
