Title: [Appomattox ink well]

Small, ceramic, bell-shaped, brown bottle, glazed, with cork. Label affixed to the bottom, inscribed by Hempstead Washburne: "This is the ink bottle used in signing the Treaty [underscored] at Appomattox by Gen. Lee & Gen. Grant. It was presented to E. B. Washburne by Gen. Grant & comes to me from my father E. B. Washburne. Hempstead Washburne [added in another hand:] 1938-126." This ink well was used by Ulysses S. Grant to sign the surrender treaty at Appomattox and was given to Elihu Washburne on 10 April 1865 along with the note announcing Robert E. Lee's surrender (GLC02084.01).

Written by Flag Officer Farragut to Major General Butler as commander of the Department of the Gulf. Farragut says he has just returned from an official visit with the Spanish commander of a steamer of war who had been detained for lack of proper documents. The Spanish commander was forced to land at New Orleans because he was out of provisions. The "store vessel", where the proper papers were stored was below and unreachable. Also signed by James Clarke. Apologizes for their delay in providing Governor of Rhode Island Cooke with accurate records of recent imports and exports that they are compiling. Thinks a more extended accounting would be more useful, and if Cooke and the legislature agree, Ellery and Clarke "will readily undertake the business and hope we shall be able to exhibit an account to August sessions." A Member of the Continental Congress from 1776 until 1785, William Ellery was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Cooke was Governor of Rhode Island from 1775 until 1778.

Proclamation promulgated by New Hampshire Governor Gilmore and New Hampshire Secretary of State Allen Tenny. Encourages the enlistment of New Hampshire citizens, who "will rise in their might and like an avalanche... sweep the last traces of armed treason into the Gulf of Mexico." Says the state needs 200,000 more troops to fill its quota by 10 March 1864. Gilmore was attempting to fulfill the terms of Lincoln's draft call of 1 February 1864 acting under the Congressional Conscription Act of 3 March 1863. Pasted to a cardboard backing.

" Warns that the American (Know-Nothing) Party can dominate the press and damage Fremont's chances.
