At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Also signed by James Clarke. Apologizes for their delay in providing Governor of Rhode Island Cooke with accurate records of recent imports and exports that they are compiling. Thinks a more extended accounting would be more useful, and if Cooke and the legislature agree, Ellery and Clarke "will readily undertake the business and hope we shall be able to exhibit an account to August sessions." A Member of the Continental Congress from 1776 until 1785, William Ellery was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Cooke was Governor of Rhode Island from 1775 until 1778.
