Signed by Mares. Lists 45 head of sheep, hogs, chickens, cooking stove, a lamp, etc. States that these were said to have been taken by the 26th regiment.

List of furniture and other sundry items with amounts and values. Signed by three officers certifying that the appraised values are fair. The second signature is too faded to read.

Copy of a telegram from Colonel White to unknown recipient. Possibly decoded cypher. Informs that General Eliakim P. Scammon's cavalry went out to the front last night but encountered a blockaded road and were ambushed near Raleigh, West Virginia. Writes, "they are scattered in the woods and I fear have lost nearly all their horses." States that two companies have gone to assist. Written on stationary marked Headquarters, 3rd Division, 8th Army Corps.

Title: [Decoded cypher telegram to unknown]

Copy of a telegram from Colonel Toland possibly to General Eliakim P. Scammon. Written in cypher in one hand, and decoded underneath possibly in the hand of Scammon. Toland writes that the powder and fuse are not in any of the wagons and that Madden thinks they were left in the staff train. Informs that they will leave soon and that, "if the enemy has retreated and suspect our plan it will be a close race they having the shortest road." Asks for reliable information on where the enemy is going.

Written from the south side of the Pamunkey River. Declares, "we have taken the Peninsular as the proper approach on Richmond." Indicates his pleasure with General Ulysses S. Grant and Grant's decision to "go precisely on [General George B.] McClellan's plan." Discusses planned march towards Richmond, 18 or 20 miles away.

Discusses the Baltimore convention and nomination of the next president. Requests newspaper announcing winner of nomination. Writes of skirmishes during and after Battle of Cold Harbor. Describes in detail the circumstances surrounding the deaths of those outlined in previous letter. Sends more photographs home (not included).

Reports on conditions at Cold Harbor, and details the regiment's plan to cross the James River. Describes a recent meal: "I have just been to dinner and what do you guess I had? It was this good nice ham, coffee, and hard-tack soacked soft in cold water then fried in the fat it was good…." Informs his mother that prayers keep him alive. Written from camp in the field near Cold Harbor.

Writes from camp outside of the city of Petersburg. References General Ulysses S. Grant's suggestion to consolidate regiment into six companies. Describes, in detail, the troops' five-day march from Cold Harbor to present location. Expects hard fighting at Petersburg. Comments on fighting of African American soldiers: "The negro troops were engaged yesterday and did splendid service they are just as good soldiers as we have in the field they are well disciplined and make a good appearance and command the respect of the white soldiers…"

Reports that he is under fire nearly everyday. Describes capture of the 4th Regiment and one battallion of the 11th Vermont Regiment. Also mentions the consolidation of 6 companies.

Mentions a 45-day drought, dust-filled marches, and destruction of rebel-held facilities. Discusses General W. F. Smith's advance on Fort Clifton: "we marched out to Reams station on the Petersburg & Weldon R.R. Destroyed a large machine shop, tore up the track burned the ties and bent the nails and inflicted all the damage we could on the 'Johnnies'."
