A print of a photograph showing a large group of workers and mechanics, some wearing leather aprons and many holding tools, posed in front of a large building. Washington became a major center for army services during the war. Numerous government repair shops [some massive in size] employing hundreds of skilled and unskilled workers were established to keep the armies running. A photograph of a Wiard rifle and its caisson. Approximately 60 of these artillery pieces were made at O'Donnell's Foundry in New York City. 6-pounder and 12-pounder guns were made. "U.S. 6 Pdr WIARD" stenciled in white on the front of the caisson. Other artillery limbers in background.

A print of a phofotograph of Colonel Benjamin F. Fisher and his assistants standing outside the Signal Corps headquarters located at 1816 F St., NW Avenue at Madison Place NW Washington, D.C. The building has a small sign that reads "Office of the Signal Officer of the Army." Fisher, born 1834, entered the military in 1861 and was attached to the Signal Corps. Captured by Confederate forces in 1863, escaped jail with 109 other Union prisoners in 1864. He was placed in command of the corps on December 26th, 1864. Crisp image of approximately 15 men posed in front of large building. The building in the immediate foreground has a sign that reads: "P. May's Bakery & Confectionary [sic]." Philip May leased the building at 75 High St. (now 1254 Wisconsin Ave., N.W.) for his bakery from 1853 to 1866. A print of a photograph of the Brigade Headquarters of Fort Lincoln, part of the defensive system around the capital (though technically located in Prince George's County, MD). Twenty Union officers are standing or seated on or near the first-floor porch of the building. It has a porch on the second floor as well. There is an ambulance parked on the left hand side of the image, between the end of the porch and a tree. Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXX 666. Defenses of Wash[ington]."

A print of a photograph of the officers of the 3rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery at Fort Totten. There are seven men present, none of them general officers. The door to the house is open revealing some of the interior of the house including the wallpaper and a piece of furniture. Note the screen netting on the open windows. Inscription on verso "Gardner 261." It has been suggested that this is a rare view of the inside of officers quarters.

The flag has six red and six white horizontal stripes and is bordered with gold braiding. Painted in the stripes are the names and dates of battles. A print of a photograph of the USS Santiago de Cuba, a wooden, brigantine-rigged, side wheel steamer built in 1861 at Brooklyn, N.Y., was purchased by the Navy on 6 September 1861 at New York City; and was commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on November 5th, 1861, Comdr. Daniel B. Ridgely in command. Patrolled waters off the Eastern Seaboard for Confederate ships and blockade runners. Decommissioned July 17th, 1865, and sold on September 21st, 1865. Served as a mercantile ship for two decades afterward. Other frigates can be seen docked in the background.
