Title: Fight the Red Menace: The Children's Crusade Against Communism Trading Cards; 23. Ghost City

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "23. Ghost City" illustrates a looming Grim Reaper figure amidst a destructed metropolis. The reverse side contains a propaganda narrative regarding the after-effects of an atomic attack on a "great American city." The text alludes that Communists rely on fear as a tactic to dismantle the strength of America, but that the United Nations is fully prepared for any attack. Title: [Middle Passage iron bilboes, 18th century]

One set of middle passage iron bilboes, circa 1680-1800. Item is an iron restraint for ankles or wrists used on slave ships to fasten two enslaved people to each other. Consist of an iron bar running through two c-shaped cuffs. One end of the rod has been flattened to make it too big to be removed from the cuffs. The other end of the rod has a loop that is attached to an iron circle. The circle can be used to attach the item to another.

Title: [Hand-forged iron shackles, 18th-19th century]

One set of hand-forged iron shackles, dated 18th-19th century. Consists of two c-shaped iron cuffs attached with heavy iron links to two round rings. One ring is larger than the other and creates a point to link the shackles to another set of shackles or a chain. At the opening of the cuffs there are oval shaped links that close the shackles off and allow for a lock to be placed. Possibly used on enslaved people.

One letter dated Shelby County, Ky, September 21, 1856 from Robert Doak to James Maguire, regarding the conditions of the will of Thomas Chambers. Has requested that enslaved people who worked for him should be freed and compensated $2,000. His estate after evaluation would be split among his wife's family, his family and other acquaintances. Doak enclosed a dollar owed by him to Maguire for a table purchased at a sale which he had not paid him yet.

Contains numerous public notices and information regarding public ordinances for the city of Charleston, South Carolina. Of particular note are three advertisements for escaped enslaved persons on the front page. The first advertisement published by Joseph Cox offers fifty dollars for the return of "Nanny," noting that "if said woman returns of her own accord, she will be forgiven." The second advertisement for "Chance," who "sometimes calls himself Charles and Thomas" offers…

One resolution detailing an assembly in Connecticut which took place on May 1, 1825, regarding the removal of the "great national evil" of slavery as voted by the Ohio legislature. Signed by Secretary, Thomas Day. An official copy printed on the second page dated June 1, 1825, sent to the Governor of Pennsylvania requesting to be presented before the General Assembly of Pennsylvania. Signed by Oliver Wolcott.

On the reverse side is a typed note, which details that Abernathy and 44 protestors were arrested during a sit-in in the lobby of the Graybar Building. The protest was for fair employment practices at A&P Company, demanding that Black people be given the opportunity to be in management positions, as well as, for the company to invest more money in Black neighborhoods.

One document entitled "Indian, Molatto, and Negro Servants and, Slaves" dated 1784. Pages were extracted from a printed folio volume of state laws. The law imposes a rule that any unaccompanied servant in public without a ticket or pass would be perceived as a runaway. This violation would cost twenty shillings. Measures extends to travelling alone, staying out past nine o'clock among many other regulations.
