Reports that the sword is not included in the package, but he will carry it home upon return of soldiers to the "state." Writes, "Should see you personally if possible as there are some things which I would represent which I cannot write about." E. G. Ballou was promoted from Captain to Major on the day Morey was killed.

Reprint of report from "Charleston Mercury" that describes how the news of the fall of Fort Sumter was received by abolitionists in Washington D.C. Several slave advertisements.

States Major McMahn and command have returned safely. They only found a few Confederates in the area of Boone, Logan, and Wyoming counties, West Virginia. They captured a lieutenant, three privates, and five horses. States, "All quiet out there - Great destitution." Mentions that Confederate General John B. Floyd is believed to be at Tazewell.
