"I heard a commotion down stairs and Mother opening the front door, a very little thing alarms us in these days of murders and robberies so I ran down stairs as fast as I could. Harry, half dressed, proceeded me revolver stuck into his pocket. Our danger, melted away when we saw Mother, Bille, and Annie reading a telegraph saying that Minnie started[home] tonight..."

The democrats "had an unpleasant time indeed at their grand turnout. . . ." He adds "I hope that Buffalo will go Republican and now I don't think them in any doubt who will be president in 1865. The 112th Regiment [New York] has not done very badly, there being 250 votes for Lincoln & five (5) for McClellan[;] don't you think it is pretty well[?]" Provides news concerning friends.

Meade, who led an armed party that initially boarded the Amistad, requesting the ship's papers. Includes the testimony of Baldwin, Dart Sharp (on board the USS Washington when it came in contact with the Amistad), and Captain Mather (who "went with Mead made soundings & c.").
