At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that General Bidwell has been killed. Reports that Charlie is now in charge of the whole Quartermasters Department. Leon is acting as storage clerk. Talks about the election of 1864. The democrats "had an unpleasant time indeed at their grand turnout. . . ." He adds "I hope that Buffalo will go Republican and now I don't think them in any doubt who will be president in 1865. The 112th Regiment [New York] has not done very badly, there being 250 votes for Lincoln & five (5) for McClellan[;] don't you think it is pretty well[?]" Provides news concerning friends.
