Title: to John Nicholson

Letter written by Clarkson, the mayor of Philadelphia, to Nicholson, a famous land speculator, as comptroller general of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He references Nicholson's letter from December 26, 1793. Says he has passed its contents on to the "Committee for the relief of the poor & distressed Citizens" who have been suffering from the "malignant disorder" - yellow fever. They accepted it with thanks and "will cheerfully undertake the distribution thereof as comfortably to your wishes as possible." Small hole where seal was removed. Paper has a watermark.

A note at the bottom of a bond of Catherine Evans tells John Lawrence that Galloway does not object to Lawrence "delivering up of yr above mentiond Bond." The letter is to John Lawrence granting bonds to carrier. Galloway, a delegate to Congress from Pennsylvania, publicly defended the Stamp Act in 1765 and became a Loyalist officer in 1776.

Sherman writes about his feud with the Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton. Informs that General Henry Halleck advised him not to reply to Stanton. Because of this, Sherman asks Ewing to keep this letter confidential, especially from the newspapers because he believes that, "No Military officer should write of the events of a Campaign until a year after the Campaign." He goes on to say, "I am satisfied Stanton is a Liar and Coward - for he states things by the merest guess." Congress must be sustained or the rebels, who have been murdering our kindred will control and destroy the Government."

The Tazewell lands were purchased by the guardian of a minor named Shurtluff, using the proceeds from the sale of the original land held in trust for him. The Tazewell lands were then placed in trust until Shurtluff came of age and appropriated them. Letter written by Lincoln on blue paper as Peters' lawyer. Docketed by recipient.

Partially printed land patent counter-signed by JamesTrimble as Deputy Secretary and witnessed by Pennsylvania Governor Thomas Mifflin. Lane obtained the land, called "Oatland" in Bald Eagle township, from Isaiah Davis. The document describes the specific boundaries of the tract, the sale of which was orchestrated through 1793 and 1794. A note signed by Matthew Irvin on the verso indicates that the patent was recorded in the state records on 20 April 1795. Large star shaped paper seal on top left corner.

Serves as an official United States Presidential form for appointments, containing an image of an eagle at the top of the page and a knight's helmet, weapons, and musical instruments resting amongst several flags at the bottom of the page. Contains a blue War Office seal.

Vice President Calhoun wrote this letter after his falling out with President Andrew Jackson over Jackson's pursuit of the Seminole Indians into Florida during the first Seminole War. Discusses the Seminole Affair and questions a recently published article that claims Jackson had invaded Florida on secret orders from President Monroe. Calhoun had disapproved of Jackson's actions and considers this a "wicked attempt top transfer the odium from where it ought to rest & to place it on the memory of Mr. Monroe."
