"New Haven" pamplet entitled-- "Memorial to the President, protesting against the use of the United-States army to enforce the bogus laws of Kansas; The Answer of President Buchanan; and The Reply of the Memorialists." Regarding the grievances of Connecticut electors with the Lecompton Constitution, popular sovereignty and slavery in Kansas, and the electors criticism of Pres. Buchanan. Buchanan's defense and justifications for his actions, then the New Haven delegation's reply.

Informs his brother-in-law of difficulties in New York en route to Washington, D.C. States that a doctor sent Webster's son Edward to the apothecary to get a "soothing anodyne plaster" for his wife Grace Webster's swollen side. Reports that after applying the medicine, the Websters realized it was a blister plaster which had raised a "great & very sore blister!" Informs Paige of a business transaction likely related to his law practice in Boston.

Reports that he received a letter from his cousin-in-law Eliza Buckminster Lee and from his daughter Julia Webster. Referring to the January 1828 death of his wife Grace Fletcher Webster, states that he "lost one half of [his] interest, & motives, in all the pursuits of life; & feel very little inclined to effort of any sort." Reports that he hopes to send Mr. Pratt (possibly fellow politician and lawyer Thomas George Pratt) $500 or $1000. Relates receiving a letter from his son Daniel Fletcher Webster, who is in Boston at boarding school. Marked copied.

Informs his brother-in-law of a debate in the Senate regarding the 1828 Tariff Bill that proposed to tax certain raw and manufactured materials including molasses and hemp. States that due to disagreements with Southern Senators, several North Eastern Senators who would normally be opposed to the bill might go "against their first opinions" and support the bill, seeing "who can bear a molasses tax longest." Worries that the Bill will get lost, as only thirteen days remain in the session. Advises Paige to "calculate ... the Bill will pass." Marked private.

Serving as Massachusetts Senator, Webster informs his brother-in-law that he will be travelling to Baltimore and Annapolis to assist in settling a legal dispute between the Maryland Rail Road and Canal. Asks if "Mrs. Webster and the girls ... talk and laugh as usual, or [if] the cold weather sealed their lips." Reports that he enjoys the company of Paige's business partner Nathan Appleton, elected in 1830 as Massachusetts Representative, and adds that he anticipates debates about the Tarriff Bill to ensue.

Informs his brother-in-law that the 1832 tariff is before Senate; claims the tariff protects cotton interests, flannels, ingrain and Venetian carpets. Assumes the "Tariff Gentlemen" will likely approve the bill, though much rests on the wish of President Andrew Jackson. Claims he almost agreed with a man from "the other side" in order to return home expediently. In a post script, states that the House of Representatives defeated a postponement of the Bank Bill, with 75 votes in agreement and 100 against.
