Lee, then president of Washington College, responds to an enquiry about whether or not a young man of Pennsylvania would be welcomed at the Virginia school. Although it was less than a year from the end of the Civil War and tensions were still runing high, Lee assures Jarvis that there would be no objection to the admission of a Northern student, as long as he met the requirements. He remarks that "from the young & thoughtless, he may occassionally hear some unpleasnat remark...The majority of the students are too high minded & generous to knowingly wound his feelings."

First edition. Quarto. With 17 engraved plates (some folding). Printed by I. and J. Taylor. Fulton's first important work. Fulton used this book to gain public recognition and indisputable credentials as an engineer. His plans and improvements for the Peak Forest canal in Manchester convinced the canal company to pay the cost of printing 200 copies of Fulton's book. Bound in original marble boards.

Collection of 41 items primarily concerning Andersonville Prison, although other Southern prisons, such as Castle Thunder and Libby Prison (both located in Richmond, Va.), are also briefly documented here. Andersonville Prison, located in Andersonville, Ga., housed Union enlisted troops incarcerated by Confederate forces, and operated from 25 February 1864 to late April 1865. Officially designated as Camp Sumter, it held more than 33,000 prisoners, while its cemetery provided graves for 12,000, although actual death toll may have been much higher.
