Requests more time to reimburse Ogden for the money she lent him, but tells her that he will borrow the money to pay her back if she is in desperate need of it. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Notes he was a patient at the Broad and Cherry Hospital a year ago, and expresses his thankfulness for all of the kindness shown him. Informs her that he was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant. Also mentions that all attempts at finding a "young lady" were "fruitless" when he went home to Minnesota for recruiting purposes. When recruiting attempts failed, the War Department ordered the regiment to consolidate into a battalion. He was elected captain of a company, and re-enlisted in the army for three more years. Tells Ogden that they did not capture Petersburg because they could not carry out Grant's commands. He says that the troops were not responsible for the failure, but rather the generals, who did not follow the orders of their superiors. The companies lost several men, and he now has only 20 muskets, as opposed to the 82 with which he had started the campaign. He concludes by wishing Ogden well and stating that he seems to be having good luck.

Writes that a severe cold, contracted on the way back from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, delayed him in getting to his regiment. The camp where he is now staying is "a very pleasant place for well men but there is but few ladies here so it is very dull for us at present." While at camp, he ran into some of the men who had been released from the Broad and Cherry Hospital just before his departure. Closes by thanking all of the women from the hospital and giving them his best wishes.

Says he has been ordered to guard the Railroad and trains from Alexandria to Brandy Station. Notes that he slept in a tent on the hard ground the first night, and caught a bad cold as a result. Troops are stationed along the road, and they are building block houses at every railroad bridge. States that several of his friends have reenlisted, but he does not have any plans to reenlist because, "3 years is enough." Recounts an instance in which the train broke down on its way to Baltimore, Maryland, and the conductor had to run back to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to get a new engine.…

He decided to reenlist for one year in Hancock's Corp, a company composed of Veterans. Says he will be receiving payment for his services. Requests that Ogden hold all the money he does not need until his service is completed. He hopes to prevent it from being stolen while he is in camp. Says he wants to start a small business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when he returns from the war.
