Title: [Manuscript Civil War map of the Battle of Williamsburg]

Shows the troop positions of forces under Union generals Philip Kearney and Joseph Hooker, as well as the Confederate line. Also shows the open field where the combatants met, Fort Magruder, and other structures. Smith is identified on the docket as "Bvt. Col. Henry W. Smith." He joined the 66th Pennsylvania Volunteers in March 1862. The Battle of Williamsburg took place on 5 May 1862. Major Henry W. Smith (1836-1869) gained notoriety in 1865 for helping to capture Lewis Payne and Mrs. Surratt, who were tried and hanged for involvement in the Lincoln assassination.

In the introduction, Campbell writes, "After what is written in the context, if I am still asked what I think of Africa for a colored man to live and do well in, I simply answer, that with as good prospects in America as colored men generally, I have determined, with my wife and children, to go to Africa to live, leaving the inquirer to interpret the reply for himself."

Comments on a relative or acquaintance with the measles, and a visit from "Miss [Tenney?]." Hopes to see Amelia's school (where she teaches) when he comes to visit her Sunday. Writes to his wife four days after their fifth wedding anniversary. Discusses the heavy rain, a humorous incident in which Colonel Thomas B. Weir formally requested an hour and a half of leave, his relationship with Weir, and his health, the possibility of giving his brother, Tom Custer, a recruiting detail. He also waxes poetic, expressing his love for Libby at length and writing, in part: "you are all I ask for, all I desire, all I long for." Also indicates that he did not want children. The last page is missing.

Beauregard notes that operations at the Landing were closed 30 September 1858 for want of funds, and that a fort keeper has manned the fort since. Reports that 30 August 1860, a severe storm destroyed Proctorville, and damages sustained by the fort require repair. Lists details of the necessary repairs. Title: [Pardon of Jose F. Gandara, convicted of conspiracy to start a military expedition against Mexico 3 December 1927]

Jose F. Gandara was convicted by the U.S. District Court of Arizona of conspiracy to "set foot or provide means for a military expedition against a friendly power, the republic of Mexico." He was sentenced to two years in the McNeil Island Penitentiary and a $1,000 fine. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the judgment. Accompanied by printed pamphlet, writ of certiorari denied by the U.S. Supreme Court, and two typed letters signed from Manuel C. Tellez, Ambassador of Mexico concerning Gandara's citizenship.

States that although he does not remember the exact position of John and Charles Henderson's four acres of land, he knows they cannot build a mill without affecting his property. Indicates that he will do whatever possible to oppose the building of a dam, "should they propose to avail themselves of the canal of the old mill I will give orders for the immediate removal of every stone in the dam... otherwise I do not wish to disturb the dam, till my own mill needs the water...." Grant, Commander in Chief of the United States Army, writes to Stanton, Secretary of War. Relates his receipt of a dispatch from General Foster (possibly John Gray Foster), describing the capture of Savannah, Georgia "with artillery, munitions of War, railroad Cars and cotton." Referring to Confederate General William Joseph Hardee, writes "I wish Hardee's fifteen to eighteen thousand of a garrison could have been added to the other captures. It is a good thing the way it stands and the country may well rejoice over it." Marked at the top as "Cipher."
