Shows the troop positions of forces under Union generals Philip Kearney and Joseph Hooker, as well as the Confederate line. Also shows the open field where the combatants met, Fort Magruder, and other structures. Smith is identified on the docket as "Bvt. Col. Henry W. Smith." He joined the 66th Pennsylvania Volunteers in March 1862. The Battle of Williamsburg took place on 5 May 1862. Major Henry W. Smith (1836-1869) gained notoriety in 1865 for helping to capture Lewis Payne and Mrs. Surratt, who were tried and hanged for involvement in the Lincoln assassination.
