Before what are we standing? I dare not answer it to myself... Let me now add that should our state need my services, I beg you will offer them, to be used by her in whatever way may to her seem best." Written at Fort Wise.

However "as soon as Col Wharton returns" with his 8,000 troops, "I will be at your service." An initialed note ("B.B.") from Braxton Bragg on verso states that Forrest should remove any men he has in town, as small guards at Bloomfield and Fairfield "are absolutely necessary...and must be furnished." Written during the Confederate invasion of Kentucky, while prospects for the campaign remained bright.

Discusses various troop movements in Mississippi. States "General Van Dorn orders Breckinridges Corps and Six Thousand men from my Command forward to Vicksburg. General Villipigue telegraphs that his command is independent. He has all my armed troops, and calls on me to defend the Memphis and Tenn Rail Road route!" It is reported that "Holly Springs is reoccupied by the Enemy and that General Sherman has twenty five thousand men at Grand Junction." Verso states that the letter was telegramed to General Bragg. For the next year Vicksburg would be a heavily contested city.

Requests that Pillow direct the paymaster to pay J. W. Stewart's troops.
