Lyman had served as an aide-de-camp to General George Gordon Meade during the Civil War, and as a Representative from Massachusetts 1883-1884.

Mentions the death of a recent acquaintance, who caught dysentery from drinking water in St. Louis, Missouri. The 1881 Greely expedition in the Arctic ended in disaster due to the failure of supply ships to reach the expedition party. When assistance reached the expedition in 1884, only seven members remained.
