Title: The Constitutional Telegraphe. [Vol.1, no. 27 (January 1, 1800)]

This document is a copy of the Constitutional Telegraphe published in 1800. It reports on the "Triumph of Democracy," the funeral of Washington (with diagram of procession) and reports a speech of Gov. McKean. The top of the newpaper is decorated with a masthead of an eagle and the motto "We advocate the rights of man." The newspaper was active from 1799-1802 and supported Thomas Jefferson during his Presidency.

Title: [Presidential commutation for William J. Dodge, convicted of sedition according to the Espionage Act on 16 September 1918 and sentenced to six years]

William J. Dodge was convicted in the U.S. District Court of Western New York of making seditious utterances while the U.S. was a war, in violation section 3 of the Espionage Act of 16 May 1918, appeal was denied by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals 13 October 1919 and the Supreme Court denied a petition for a writ of certiorari. Dodge began serving his sentence at the State penitentiary at Baltimore, Maryland on 22 January 1920. Wilson commuted his sentence to expire on 22 November 1920. Countersigned by William L. Clay, an abolitionist, informs his friend Ballard that he was misrepresented by the New York Tribune. Discusses the possibility of New Mexico entering the Union as a free or slave state, and the Compromise of 1850. Defends himself from Horace Greeley's criticism (Greeley was editor of the Tribune). Concludes by stating, "Things look awfully gloomy-- I feel a split on the slave [line]! God save the Republic."

Responds to a part of a speech given by Lumpkin, a Georgia congressman, dealing with Indian tribes east of the Mississippi. Contends that Indians "can only be perpetuated as tribes, or nations, by concentrating them west of the Mississippi upon lands secured to them, forever, by the United States, where its...liberal protecting care, can be extended to them." He is happy Lumpkin is on a congressional committee considering the topic. Includes small undated collateral print.

Although it is not mentioned in the letter, the extension was needed to complete the Confiscation Act, which was passed July 17, 1862. The body of the letter is in the hand of John G. Nicolay, Lincoln's secretary. It is very unusual that the letter is signed "Abraham Lincoln," instead of "A. Lincoln." Grow was the House speaker. Basler, Roy P. Printed declaration by President Buchanan proclaiming that a state of rebellion exists in the Territory of Utah, and offering a pardon to all citizens who submit to the authority of the United States government.
