Includes two charts. The first indicates, "MArch 9th 1779 Congress resolved that the Infantry of these States for the next campaign, be composed of 80 battalions." Lists states and corresponding quotas and required troops for 1779. Lists numbers of men furnished, separated by Continental troops and militia. Includes total number of Continental troops and militia. Second chart contains an estimate of militia employed in addition to those cited in the first chart. The Union has captured Chattanooga and he heard that Charleston was taken. Their picket line is near the river and the Confederates are on the other side. The Confederates know "more about retreat than anything else." There are rumors that the regiment will go home to control Copperheads.

Jones, a Civil War soldier, replies to a letter from his wife. Expresses joy that Nancy spends time with Brother Millis, possibly a pastor. Traveled the previous day from Bellefont to Stevenson, Alabama. States that divisions led by Generals [Jefferson C.] Davis and [Philip] Sheridan crossed the Tennessee River the previous day. Informs Nancy that corps led by Generals Alexander M. McCook and Thomas L. Crittenden will cross, or have already crossed the Tennessee between Stevenson and Chattanooga, Tennessee. States "the rebs is stil retreating and falling back to atlanta gorga ... "…

5,000 troops marched with six pieces of cannon to find the Confederates. He tries to convey what it is like to be in a soldiers' camp; "I could lay down in sight of the rebels and go to sleep without any feer." Their course is towards Mumfordsville.

They defeated Bragg, Johnson, and the Richmond army even though they were outnumbered five to one. They fell back here to fortify as the Confederates are planning to attack. He calls Stones River a skirmish in comparison with this battle. He has seen nine total days of hard battle in the war: six at Stones River, one at Liberty Gap, and two here in the Battle of Chickamauga.

His regiment is still under Colonel Buckner. They began with 965 men of which 584 remain, 130 of which are still in the regiment. He expects the regiments to be consolidated as they are too small to hold their position alone. His regiment is pleased that Vallandigham lost in Ohio even without the soldiers' votes and with the new governor of Pennsylvania.

"It is nothing to a soldier to here of the death of a friend or comrade for he has enough of such…that he cannot mourn for the dead." He describes the Battle of Chickamauga: "For two long days we fought the brave men of longstreets corps from Richmond they having two to our one…many were to be he[a]rd crying for help as we would have to walk over them and turn our ears to their cries." He wants to send her his diary of the past year and is keeping one for this year as well.

General Thomas replaced General Rosecrans "on the account of Brag driving him back" to Chattanooga where Grant is now in command. He heard that Hooker defeated Bragg. They have not encountered Price since he left or Marmaduke since he attacked a few weeks ago "with 6,000 men against 600 and got whipped." "Rebeldom is about played out."

The Confederates had an internal battle on October 28: "One brigad[e] of them was determined to quit them and ground arms and come to our lines and they was silenced by their trusty troops which terminated in three hours fight killing eight hundred men." He saw two men shot to death for desertion yesterday.
