Relates that he has drawn on Benjamin Walker for $550 to pay for their supplies, and asks Knox to tell Walker, since he has no time to write him. If they have good conditions, he hopes to return to Boston in 15-20 days. Believes it is too late in the season for them to start a settlement, since "one snow storm before they are well establish'd, will damn the whole operation."

Contains a 29 October 1791 note and the clerical signature of Timothy Rogers authorizing William Taylor to be the attorney for Goldthwait. Contains a 12 August 1806 note signed by Harrison Gray Otis vesting "in said Taylor & his heirs, all the estate of said Thomas Goldthwait."

By virtue of the credit given to de la Roche and de Leval of the French Company of the Union by William Duer, any supplies necessary for the settlement, including clothing and provisions, should be purchased. Writes, "The message by Mr. Duer was upon the general concern between him and me where he says you were of opinion [it] was rather of too great magnitude to be undertaken without yourself consulting certain gentlemen in England, and that you mentioned something of a private arrangement between you and me which he had not [understood]." Hopes to get an explanation from Smith soon. The last few lines of the letter are struck, but they include the statement that "Mr. Hammond has not yet unfolded his character."

Receipt confirms an agreement the company made on 27 August 1791 with William Duer in New York, and on 3 September 1791 with Henry Knox in Philadelphia; it lists goods and services purchased by the company on Henry Jackson's credit. The total amount of goods and services purchased was £188.2.2. Some of the items include planks, flints, washtubs, bread, and amounts due to various merchants.
