Knox writes to Parsons, Varnum, and Symmes, the first judges of the Northwest Territory. Introduces Thomas H. Cushing, who served in the army during the Revolutionary war and plans to settle in the Northwest Territory. Recommends Cushing for the position of clerk of the court for the Northwest Territory. The first, written on 7 February 1792, declares that he was informed by General [Benjamin] Lincoln that Lincoln has no openings under him and so will be unable to hire Peirce's son at present. However, he will keep him in mind for any future openings. Peirce's son, who is the bearer of the letter, intends to set up trade connections between Philadelphia and Boston. Asks that Knox provide him with a horse or approve of him obtaining one. Lost his horse "before York" (possibly meaning in battle), and cannot afford another. Wants to borrow a horse in order to travel to Boston: "As I have no other way of getting to Boston to see and provide for my family, & as we are disapointed in our expectations of receiving regular payments, they require my presence to point out some mode for their future support while I am in the service of my country." Promises to return the horse in good working order.

Wadsworth writes, "It is now in contemplation to appoint you Secretary at Warr- the Salary may possibly be 2500 dollars per annum- which is certainly too small, but small as it is, it is probable it will be 500 dollars less- and not worth Your acceptance." Suggests that if Knox accepts the position, he hire Samuel Blachley Webb to oversee affairs in New York while he remains in Boston.

Congratulates Knox on his resignation from the position of Secretary at War and informs him about the progress on the house Knox is building [Montpelier]. Informs him of an unnamed man "the owner of a certain piece of land on the [Mill?] River" was about to sail for Boston but had some bad luck. He injured his hands "by blowing of lime rock" and his daughter died. Discusses some issue involving this man.
