One photograph of Bessie Coleman with her airplane dated 1922. Bessie Coleman was born to a family of sharecroppers, picking cotton as a child. She became the first African-American woman (and first Native American) to hold a pilot license by earning her license while training in France because she was not allowed to earn such license in the United States. Bessie was also the first Black person to earn an international pilot’s license.

Brown was the first African American to complete Navy flight training. Jesse Brown was a hero fighter pilot and was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, and also the first African American naval officer killed in the Korean War.

Poster is advertising for the Betsy Ross Air Corps, the first of several paramilitary women's aviation organizations that hoped to support the Army Air Corps and assist during times of national emergency. The Corps was founded in 1931 by Opal Kunz, a charter member of the Ninety-Nines organization of women pilots and the first woman to race men in open competition. The Corps had its own uniforms and was divided into nine regions across the country.
