Rivington, a journalist and bookseller, writes to an unspecified recipient (possibly Henry Knox). Writes, "I would long ago have sent you the Irish Editions you wanted but on examining found I had no quantity to make up a parcell [sic]... I now trouble you with 6 Dozen of my almanack with a list of the whole American Army Subalterns included which never was done before & will be much demanded by the military..." Also transmits a parcel for D. Philips of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and some pills Rivington claims can cure a great number of [ailments?].

Explains his delay in writing to him because of the comment in his last letter home that "you thought no one with a spank of loyalty in them could support General McClellan..." Responds "I think as much of my country as anyone." Reports the crops have been threshed resulting in 188 bushels of wheat and 147 bushels of oats. Says he won't sell the wheat yet because the price is one dollar fifty cents per bushel and he thinks it will go higher. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Reports on a visit from dear friend John Petty. States his division has been ordered to march with [General William T.] Sherman. Mentions he will never regret having served three years in the Army, "but ever since my dear Father died, I have thought my duty was more at home than any place else."

Thanks him for the money he sent for the new wagon they need. Prays for his safe return.

Remarks he received two pamphlets, "Copperhead Conspiracy" and "A Scathing Review of General McClellan's Military Career." Claims he read one and was unable to finish the other "but whether I profited any by them remains to be seen." Envelope includes a three cent stamp.

Reports she expects to get married next May and wants him to attend the wedding, even if he needs to get a furlough. Letter is signed "Cousin Lydia." The last name of Cherry is assumed based on other cousins' last name, but not confirmed.

Writes from the mouth of the White River, expressing his wish they were together, "but the fates have willed it otherwise, and we must rest content." Informs him of the consolidation of the 120th Ohio Volunteer Infantry with the 114th. States he is Adjutant of the new regiment which totals 946 men. Says he is sorry Grier took offense when he did not visit him on furlough and has written him a letter.

Reports on a conversation with a friend where he said, "I had a girl at home whom my hopes for happiness in the future were centered." States Union General Napoleon J.T. Dana is now in command of his department in Memphis. Mentions snowy weather. Letter continues the next morning.

Reports Union General James C. Veatch issued the order dissolving all court-martial and military commissions within the district of western Tennessee, and he is temporarily unemployed. Says once the courts are reorganized in a few days, he will be retained as clerk. Comments the news looks good as Confederate General John B. Hood "...has been completely used up at Nashville." Complains of constant rain and slushy streets. Wishes he could be home for the holidays. Begs her to write more frequently.

Says he doesn't like the tone of her recent letter, "...your speaking of the love you had for me you said it in such a light way, that there might be a question as to whether you were sincere or not." Comments he is sorry to hear that small pox is still going around. States he is still uncertain of his employment as a clerk, but doesn't think he could survive "Field Service."

Adds, "Since last night every one has been on a big drunk, of course I except myself, I only drank a quart or two of egg-nog." Reports his court has been reorganized and he is still on duty as a clerk. Closes letter with,"Remember me in your prayers Bell, for I have many temptations that you know not of."

Comments the draft "...is to come off again and the folks are very busy trying to raise the money to get the men from others places..." Expresses fear that Grier may be drafted. Letter continues the following morning.
