Shows the various buildings and structures in camp, including barracks, a sawmill, barns, and a steam furnace. The buildings are numbered and there is a corresponding legend on the verso. Drawn in pencil with a colored flag. The regiment operated from 1863-1865 in southwestern Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Indian Territory. Frank Hoyt enlisted as a private in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment in December 1863 and served until August 1865.

Barbara Frietchie gained fame for telling T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson to harm her rather than the Union flag at the time he entered Frederick, Maryland. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published the poem in Nov. 1863 and it was printed with the carte to raise money for the war effort. The Great Central (Sanitary) Fair in Philadelphia opened in 1864. The negative was taken by Anthony Berger 2/9/1864 and is the basis for Lincoln on $5 bill. The carte de visite (GLC02910.02) is by Gardner 2/24/1861, republished by Gardner (imprint on verso), O-49 (M-71). It is the same image as GLC00919.01.
