At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Gives the names of six individuals they believe to be spies for the Union. Lists the reasons he believes these men are spies, and what they have done against the Confederate government. The letter is addressed to "Colonel Pit" but the envelope is addressed to George Wortham. Signed three times by B. S. Basnight, also signed by William Basnight and Charles McClees.

Excerpt: "…we are perfectly satisfied that the within named parties have frequently reported to the Yankeys newes to the detriment of the C. Government…."
