Writes to a Colonel whose name is unspecified the day before Union General William T. Sherman's troops destroyed much of Columbia (Law was one general in charge of evacuating the city). Requests that forces under Captain D. H. Hamilton (possibly Daniel H. Hamilton), Provost Marshal, be ordered to report to him. Further requests "that the Battalion of State Cadets be also ordered to report to me for police duty in the city." Notes that the force under his command for police duty is insufficient. Law writes from Office of the Provost Marshal.

Writes, "In accordance with which, I would request you to send to me, as a reinforcement in as short a time as possible, one regiment, or as many companies as will give a force of 800 men..."

Colonel Pettigrew reports to Manigault (1817-1874), Colonel of Ordnance, that General P.G.T. Beauregard, Commander of forces at Charleston Harbor, has ordered that the Board of Ordnance should supply Pettigrew with grape shot and cases. Contains two notes at the bottom of the page, one written in pencil and one in pen, discussing details of the ordnance requested.

Captain Ransom writes to Branch, a United States Representative from North Carolina, Ransom's home state. Reports that there has been no mail for two months, but the previous day, received shocking news (possibly referring to secession of several southern states): "The news which has reached us startles the most lethargic. Before what are we standing? I dare not answer it to myself... Let me now add that should our state need my services, I beg you will offer them, to be used by her in whatever way may to her seem best." Written at Fort Wise.

I hope you may be able to confer this appointment... the Government could not do better than to avail itself of his services- Let me insist upon a favorable consideration of his application..." Docket indicates that the appointment is desired by John P. Milton.

Colonel Porter forwards a telegram (not present) from his brother, Major William Alexander, to General Beauregard, commander of the Potomac District, Department of Northern Virginia. Reports that he does not know what the telegram pertains to, but that it was probably sent at the request of General Toombs (possibly Robert Augustus Toombs). Remarks that William is Toombs' son-in-law.

Reply to Garner's order, stating that he cannot "guard the mines at Bloomfield and Fairfield" because he has no troops. However "as soon as Col Wharton returns" with his 8,000 troops, "I will be at your service." An initialed note ("B.B.") from Braxton Bragg on verso states that Forrest should remove any men he has in town, as small guards at Bloomfield and Fairfield "are absolutely necessary...and must be furnished." Written during the Confederate invasion of Kentucky, while prospects for the campaign remained bright.
