Telegram from Colonel Paxton to Brigadier General Scammon. Reports on men that are supposedly heading bushwhacking companies around Clay Court House in West Virginia. States that he divided his men and they went searching for them house to house but the men escaped to the woods. Says they returned to camp because the men and horses were tired. He has seven prisoners. Informs that on Monday the men will gather at Logan Court House to elect a Colonel. Writes, "...Union men selling salt to go to Dixie for 350 per bushel. She told a woman at the 91st military hospital that she was spy sent from Princeton, West Virginia and was paid $100 for every trip, this being her fourth. Wheeler was noted for his command of cavalry during the Civil War, was wounded three times and had sixteen horses shot from under him. He was known as "Fightin' Joe Wheeler."

Was shot in the shoulder by grape shot, breaking it badly…he lived about twenty minutes past…[and] was buried with as much respect as possible. Buried near a tree with his name written on a board and nailed to the tree above him." Letter written from "Camp 2nd Vermont in the Field."
