Lightner, Esq. had joined the Grand Army of the Union. Reports that Grant is receiving reinforcements daily and in large numbers. Recounts a brief interaction between a Confederate and a Union soldier regarding some stray cattle. Reports that there is no news from the Army of the James.

The regiment is relieved by green troops, which consists of the 209th 211th, and 207th Pennsylvania. He hopes to be back to Bermuda Hundred after they've done what they have been sent to do. Includes a postscript reporting that the soldiers will cross the James River and "give you a good Union victory."

Names and describes some of the men wounded and lost in the battle, including Corporal Housewearst, who was considered the pride of the company. Writes that General Butler has sent Major Winn to Harrisburg for more recruits to "fill up" the regiment.
