References a letter from Mrs. Kerby from Antigua, and sends it to Lucy for her amusement (see GLC02437.05882). Asks Lucy to send some muslin for handkerchiefs. Mentions her children and various family members. Is thankful that Henry Knox has recovered. Has heard Lucy is fat and tall now and "I expect to be a shrimp by you." Provides a list of payments made to the 10 employees of the War Department for the second quarter of 1793. A total of $1,695.18 was paid out on 2 July. All the employees except Secretary Knox signed the document, saying they received their money. The document notes Knox has a salary of $3,000 per annum and his chief clerk makes $800 per annum. The assistant clerks make $500 per annum, while the messenger makes $250. Signed by John Stagg, Constant Freeman, Jr., Benjamin Bankson, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Henry Laugier, David Henley, Jacob Hoffman, and Frederick Sprig.

Was shocked to read about the death of Mrs. Lear and her child in the newspaper (a reference to Mary "Polly" Long Lear, who had married Tobias Lear in 1790, and died in the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia). Provides a breakdown of the War Department's salaries for the third quarter of 1793. Includes the salaries for Henry Knox, John Stagg, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Laugier, Jacob Hoffman, William Burton, and Frederick Sprig. The total amount of the salaries is $1546.47. Knox received $750 for three months as Secretary of War. He made a total of $3,000 for the year. Page two is dated 2 October and has the signatures of all the War Department employees, except Knox, stating they received their pay.

Reports that the cold and marching has made Mr. Vesey ill. Tells of their travels in Maine and their high expenses thus far. Says "the Inhabitants are extravigent [sic] in their demands, they take ever[y] advantage of us knowing that we must submit, for we cannot proceed on without their assistance - from this state of act please to inform me, must I proceed on at this great expence of more than 4 Dolls pr day when on business, and as much when detaind by Mr Vesey Ill health."
