Partially form filled in and signed by Paine, the Attorney General of Massachusetts. States that because Troutbeck removed to British territory (during the American Revolution" his property in Waltham, Massachusetts was being confiscated in accordance with "An Act for confiscating the Estates of certain Person commonly called Absentees." Extensive autograph fill-ins and some alterations of the printed portion. Docket reads "Government & People vs. John Troutbeck."

Brigadier General Parsons complains about insufficient provisions and decreasing numbers of troops, in which he did not see "in the present Temper of the Country a possibility of recruiting them again. Rails against Congress and the promotion of General Smallwood (to Major General after the Battle of Camden), which he took as a personal offense because his own service was overlooked.

"We are Compelled to haul our own forage, rations, ammunition, Clothing, and Supplies of all sorts...We must therefore know before-hand or we cant be ready." Signed by Governor of Massachusetts Hancock and countersigned by Secretary of the State John Avery. Johnson was to be hanged for burglary. After requesting further time to prepare for death, he was granted a suspension of his sentence for five additional weeks. Johnson had already received a suspension for two weeks. Paper seal attached.

Donelson and Andrew Jackson Jr. liable for the sum. Tells Latham that Stockly's part of the debt is secured by a deed of trust.

Wishes Creswell success in his career as a Representative.

Title: War Meeting! at Laona!

Recruitment broadside with woodcut of American eagle on top of shield. The eagle holds a banner that says "The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved!" Says there is a meeting at the church in Laona. Discussion to be on raising volunteers for the defense of the country. Certificate of Authenticity in the collateral file estimated the date as 1862, which was used to date this record. Broadside is cut unevenly and has some damge at the top.

Includes by-laws for Colored Ladies Lincoln Association and a document regarding a freeman emancipating an enslaved woman he intended to marry. Also includes slave sales documents. The collection also includes materials relating to the Pursoll family, the Winn family, and a printed document signed by Peter V. Daniel, who later served as Supreme Court Justice. A finding aid list was created by Pierpont Morgan Library.

Provides a lengthy discussion of "the declaration of war with G. Britain, and the unprepared Situation we were placed in to make our defence." Comments on the spread of the news of the start of the War of 1812 to British forces and relations with Canada and Indian tribes. Also discusses the postal road and a meeting with Joseph B. Varnum, a Massachusetts congressman from 1795-1811. Mentions in a postscript that he thinks the danger from Indians is greater in Dracut, Massachusetts, then where he is writing from, in Batavia, New York. Written to his father.
