Written at 12 Midnight. Sylvia woke up late and had to rush to work and got the entertainment for the Victory Party organized. Reports on friends and family. Sylvia says "I have learned that I can live independently- but only because you are always there- + I have discovered that although we were as close as two people could possibly be - I was an independent individual- with freedom as to thinking... + freedom of action- + likes + dislikes- I could go where + when I wished (tho I wished most often to be with you)." She is surprised when he tells her that her letters have not been censored.

She also has arranged for a play that is to be done in pantomime. She is sending him another package soon. Comments that since he walked four miles to find a thatched cottage, and that she will remind him of that when she wants to walk to Sheepshead Bay [about a half mile from their house].

Recalls past New Year's Days and how they didn't realize that the events of the world would affect their lives. She had a difficult day at work. But came home to a warm, clean, cheerful house, with David, her nephew, running to meet her with a dirty face.

It was the first time she had ever organized anything on such a large scale (200 guests attended). A million things went wrong (props, lights), but in spite of everything it was funny and the audience laughed and applauded. Tells him that her sister Mad helped her very much with the play.

Letter is decorated with hearts which Sylvia says are her first installment on Valentine's Day. She tried sending him the New York Times, but it keeps coming back to her. Also, talks about the new found freedom that women now have. She mentions that when she is out with the girls, she does not "have to rush home immediately." But for her, things can be adjusted easily because she would prefer to rush home but for others, "it may become a habit- not easily broken." Went over to the Selective Service Board after dinner.

Can't use the car very often, as now she only had "A" [ration] coupons, so only one and a half gallons of gas a week. Talks in general about all of the expenses of the car, housing and insuring it. Had dinner with Moe's mother. Reports on his Mom and Dad and family.

Is sorry he is not getting her letters sooner and will try to write some more V-mails, as they seem to arrive more regularly than letters.
