General Smith writes to Wise, commander of forces at Chaffin's Bluff. Reports that George W. Randolph, Confederate Secretary of War, informed him "that a flag of truce steamer was signaled yesterday coming up the James river supposed to be bound for Aiken's landing." Instructs Smith to prepare the guard at Aiken's landing. Remarks, "The landing of irresponsible or unauthorized persons should be strictly guarded against, and precautions taken to prevent the enemy from obtaining information." One bust engraving of Smith included as collateral.
