A man, small black child and a dog pose in the center of the image. The blacksmith shops and horses are in the background. Men work with horses on the left side of the image. Washington became a major center for army services during the war. Numerous government repair shops [some massive in size] employing hundreds of skilled and unskilled workers were established to keep the armies running.

This collection consists of eleven letters (one is a copy) written by Josiah E. Henry, some detailing the Valley Campaign in 1864. Five of these letters are written to his sister, four are addressed to his mother, and two are written to both his parents. Josiah E. Henry enlisted on 27 August 1861 as a Private. He was mustered into Company I, 5th Regiment of the Vermont Cavalry on 16 September 1861. He reenlisted on 15 December 1863 and was finally mustered out on 10 July 1865. Sharpas writes first of Lord Cornbury's impending arrival in New York, with his retinue including his wife and children, Mr. Honan his private secretary, and Coll Richard Ingoldsby. He then writes of the war which was ongoing in Europe, in which King Willliam travelled to Holland with an army, the Swedish army (led by the young Swede king) defeated the Saxon army near Riga, and a rout of the French by the Italians (in which 13,000 Frenchmen were killed and "54 pieces of Cannon" were taken).
