Bruce, former United States Senator from Mississippi, signs as the recorder of deeds for the District of Columbia. Hugh Nelson and James W. Greer sign as trustees, transmitting the lot to Charles H. Gladden. Howard M. Norris signs as notary public.

One book entitled "Scott's Official History of the American Negro in the World War" written by Emmett J. Scott dated 1919. This book is a history of African American roles and efforts during World War I. It is broken into thirty one chapters. There are also many photographs of soldiers in both individual portraits and larger groups.

One issue of Life magazine dated September 3, 1956. Issue is dedicated to segregation. Front cover contains an illustration of a slave auction. Cover story pertains to a highlight of Africa which the magazine refers to as the "Land Slaves Called Home." Provides details of the slave trade. Also included in this issue are photographs of the Democratic Party convention for Dwight D. Eisenhower and Republican Party convention for the election for Richard Nixon.

President Lincoln sends a colored man to advise the Secretary of War, Stanton, on the organization of colored troops in the army. Instructs Stanton to "see [L.H.?] Putnam, whom you will find a very intelligent colored man, and who wishes to talk about our colored forces, their organization ... " Written on a small card.

Vice President Roosevelt discusses the reappointment of W. C. Church, an African American who worked as assistant clerk at Jefferson Market City Magistrate's Court, New York City. Informs Cornell, a judge in the Magistrate's Court, that Church attended Columbia University. Declares "I always have a profound sympathy with the Colored man of education, for such a man has so few opportunities that it does seem that the hand of Providence was especially heavy upon him." Typed on Vice President's Chamber stationery.

Stagg fills in for William Knox at the War Office (William was conducting War Office business in Henry's absence and is indisposed due to illness). Notes that William is too sick to answer correspondence. Reports that [John] Pratt, who was ordered to march with troops to Fort Pitt, will soon arrive in New York. Comments on transporting clothing to Fort Pitt. Notes that Pratt's men and the clothing will depart from New Brunswick. Title: A letter from the Hon. Gerrit Smith, to the Cuban Anti-Slavery Committee, New York.

Smith writes, "As I view it, our Government should, long ago, have conceded belligerent rights to the Cubans struggling for freedom from the yoke of Spain and from the yoke of Slavery... The world is too far advanced in a rational civilization and in an all-comprehending fraternal religion, that it should any longer be allowable for the nations to stand still whilst one of them continues to indulge in the horrid crimes of which, if they were ever guilty, they have thoroughly repented." Notes that Samuel Raymond Scottron served as the committee's president, and H. H. Garnet as vice president…

Later copy. Knox reports that he has received from Lincoln his letter of 27 April 1791 and sent the enclosures on to a Mr. Lear via his servant Caesar. Knox says he will be happy to offer Dr. [William] Eustis "something worthy of his acceptance."

Hazelwood is writing the Senator for money that is owed to him. The note is according to the docket 400 dollars, and he wants an additional 100 dollars as his interest amount. It seems like Hazelwod might be in trouble of some sort since he wrote "I have employed a good lawyer to defend me in Circuit Court. I am almost confident that I will be cleared because I have done nothing."

Smith is writing to Hill, in regards to an application to the Post Office that he is withdrawing. He does this he say because he has already lost too much money as a result of putting his business on hold waiting for the appointment, and that he needs to make some money. Smith also says to thank Bruce for his help and that he would be writing Bruce in thanks as well.
