At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One issue of Life magazine dated September 3, 1956. Issue is dedicated to segregation. Front cover contains an illustration of a slave auction. Cover story pertains to a highlight of Africa which the magazine refers to as the "Land Slaves Called Home." Provides details of the slave trade. Also included in this issue are photographs of the Democratic Party convention for Dwight D. Eisenhower and Republican Party convention for the election for Richard Nixon.
