Title: [Two Magie family letters]

Consists of two letters: one from Charles Magie to his father; another from Abraham to James. Four pages total. Both letters were written at Terre Haute, Indiana, 26 April 1863. Grandfather Abraham does not want the money that James Magie tried to loan him. Mother [Mary] said that Magie was unable to get a pass for him to join his father [James]. Also discusses planting and mentions uncle Ambrose. [Second letter: Abraham M. to James] He does need the money from his son [James Magie] but Ambrose and two other men want to open a blacksmith and wagon shop and could use the money.

Signed by Schuyler and James Glean as witnesses to certify the valuation in May 1776. A note on the bottom by Thomas Moore indicates that Henry Knox gave his quartermaster, Jonathan Pollard, the amount listed and that Pollard paid Moore on 12 June 1776. For Knox's receipt from Pollard see GLC02437.00338.

Discusses the canons he was ordered to make. Work had stopped from lack of communication but was restarting, and Hoff seeks instructions on what to make. Also indicates that he has the opportunity to hire additional moulders, one of which was the letter bearer, his brother, John Hoff. Assures Knox his iron will make good canons. Hoff ran a foundry called Hibernia Furnace.

Writes to accept the offer proposed by General [Henry] Knox in his last letter. Declares that he is under great "obligation to the Genl for his favourable opinion of my integrity, I shall ever do my Best Endeavors for the public good and the Genl's approbation." (See GLC02437.01594, in which Knox offers Ruddock the position of deputy commissary of West Point.) Adds in a note that he has enclosed the return of musket cartridges that Knox asked for in his letter, and writes that "with Respect to the powder the Coopers are at work upon it will be ready in a day or two."

Expresses disappointment with Mr. Peck's ideas regarding the planned construction of a ship. Writes, "If his demand should be so Extravagant as we cannot comply with, shall the ship stand still, or shall another person be appointed to Construct & superinted [sic] the Building. I expect there is other Ship Builders besides Mr. Peck." Samuel Shaw gave Parkman the authority to hire Peck; Parkman asks Knox's advice, since he cannot hire another builder besides Peck without Shaw's approval. Outlines a situation concerning a Robert Richardson, sent to West Point from Springfield the previous fall. Richardson is not attached to any corps in particular, and works at the laboratory and at other positions at the post. Moodie is finding it difficult to provide him with clothing, provisions and pay because he is not attached to any group. He therefore is applying to Knox for instruction. Adds in a post script that a Donald Campble at Fishkill with Rodock [probably John Ruddock, the commissary at Fishkill] is in a similar situation as Richardson.
