The loan may have been used to help pay off some of the debts Jefferson incurred while secretary or to help with a major building project he began at Monticello in the spring of 1794. Docketed by Ross, indicating that the money had been loaned in cash.

A print of a photograph taken of the Grand Review of the Union Army on May 23rd, 1865. The photograph shows the north wing of the US Capitol building with the camera facing south-west. There is a large crowd in front of the Capitol, presumably soldiers, and the Capitol is decorated in funeral bunting. A flag flying on the roof is at half-mast. From the Gardner-Ordway collection, a small format (half stereo-card size) print (labeled on verso 1281 XXVI). An albumen print, unmounted.

An oval-shaped print of a photograph of Brigadier General George Stoneman (1822-1894) and four other officers sit on horses while Union soldiers stand on top of a cabin, stretching a canvas across the open roof. A tent has been erected next to the cabin and a woman dressed in a dark dress stands in front. An inscription on the reverse side reads: "Building winter quarters. Hedley says that the Brig. gen. in this plate should be easily identified. 15842 War." Title taken from this. Also stamped on back is "Art Department, The Century Co., 33 East 17th St., New York City."

A print of a photograph of the 41st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Approximately sixty-two men posed around construction site. Note the partially constructed sidewalk in the left foreground and the lumber in the right background. The soldier's rifles are stacked. Some of the soldiers pose as if they are whittling and one looks as if he is drinking from a canteen. One soldier poses with a bugle and another with a drum, and many tug on pipes. Officers are present in the foreground. The 41st N.Y. was active from June 27, 1861 to July 3, 1863.

States that although he does not remember the exact position of John and Charles Henderson's four acres of land, he knows they cannot build a mill without affecting his property. Indicates that he will do whatever possible to oppose the building of a dam, "should they propose to avail themselves of the canal of the old mill I will give orders for the immediate removal of every stone in the dam... otherwise I do not wish to disturb the dam, till my own mill needs the water...."
