At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unsigned, but content and docket suggest the author is Henry Knox. Written from Montpelier, Knox's home in Thomaston, Maine. Agrees to provide Francis with shipbuilding supplies, "for the interest of the public." Discusses the logistics of this plan, including when the different supplies will arrive to Francis, and also how Knox may provide vessels to transport the supplies to Francis. Provides the prices he would charge for the different articles.
