Discusses his past letters that have not reached Dr. Burr. Requests a report detailing the conditions in Mexico. Says that Mrs. Monk informs him that Burr refused to deliver Cripps' goods. Hopes that there was a misunderstanding. Would like Burr to let him know which of his possessions are still for sale. Gadsden had left property in Mexico and periodically inquired as to how his sales were getting along. Imprint illegible. Date inferred from mention of news from Mrs. Monk, Cripps' mother, who died December 1857.

Mentions having read in the Herald a letter to General Gadsden by Cripps and is surprised that Monk had not known about it. The letter was later commented upon in the National Intelligencer. Author invites Monk to visit and will leave the arrangements up to her. Discusses personal business. Addressed to Monk in the care of Mr. Benedict. Hand postmarked 7 December, Rippon, Virginia. Includes three cent stamp.

Envelope included does not seem to have originally held this letter.

Includes a quote from the President on the bestowing of commissions and reminds Cripps of the seriousness of the situation. Adds a list of items he needs to receive with regard to the register of commissions.

Imprint on upper left corner depicts a galleon beneath "Paris."

Discusses personal news and his "hard campaigning" at Vicksburg as General Breckinridge's Adjutant General. Hopes to be back in Richmond soon to see action and has yet to receive a scratch from battle.

He heaps praise on several officers. Indicates that "the interests of the regiment require your influence and presence." Describes the regiments collective dream of a glory-filled homecoming. A note on page 2 indicates that they are in need of instruments and medicine for forty sick men.
