Comments on fighting of African American soldiers: "The negro troops were engaged yesterday and did splendid service they are just as good soldiers as we have in the field they are well disciplined and make a good appearance and command the respect of the white soldiers…"

Says he traveled to Washington, D. C. to obtain information and spoke with an officer from his son's regiment. The officer told him that his son had been taken prisoner, but could not say whether or not he was wounded. States it has been four weeks since his son was last seen on the field and there has been no mention of his name in any of the army lists. Envelope includes a three cent stamp.
