They defeated Bragg, Johnson, and the Richmond army even though they were outnumbered five to one. They fell back here to fortify as the Confederates are planning to attack. He calls Stones River a skirmish in comparison with this battle. He has seen nine total days of hard battle in the war: six at Stones River, one at Liberty Gap, and two here in the Battle of Chickamauga.

"It is nothing to a soldier to here of the death of a friend or comrade for he has enough of such…that he cannot mourn for the dead." He describes the Battle of Chickamauga: "For two long days we fought the brave men of longstreets corps from Richmond they having two to our one…many were to be he[a]rd crying for help as we would have to walk over them and turn our ears to their cries." He wants to send her his diary of the past year and is keeping one for this year as well.

Written in the woods near Ringgold, Georgia. The regiment marched through Chattanooga, Tennessee and camped just past the Chickamauga battle ground. At Gordons Mills near Chickamauga, Georgia the regiment got into its first fight. The regiment went on picket duty at 4 A.M. the following day. He states they marched again to where he is presently writing from and that more and more troops have been coming into camp asking what the army's intentions are.
