Title: Fight the Red Menace: The Children's Crusade against Communism trading cards; 7. Trouble on the Docks

One trading card from the Red Menace collection, "7. Trouble on the Docks" depicting an arm-to-arm combat between French protesters and with Indochine officers at a dock. Reverse side contains propaganda narrative that describes communists attempting to stop an arms delivery to France as troublesome. The text highlights that the "free world depends a lot on the shipment of supplies." It also mentions that American ports would never allow violent means to stop it.

Published in Maine, probably in Hallowell (inferred from many ads from there). Date inferred.

Title: [Copy of a letter to President Abraham Lincoln regarding colonization of the Isthmus of Chiriqui]

An unknown author informs Lincoln of the problems of colonizing Africans and African Americans on the Isthmus of Chiriqui (in what is now Panama). States that colonization alone will not solve the racial prejudices existing both in the United States and Chiriqui. One edge of this document appears to be burned, obscuring text. Contains a pencil sketch and a poem at the bottom of the second page written in a different hand than that of the author.

20th Congress, 2d Session, document no. 89. Congress has no power to appropriate money to aid the American Colonization Society (based on strict construction of the Constitution). The resolution mentions the concern that the next step would be Congress buying slaves for the purpose of liberating and colonizing them.

Accompanied by FF envelope. Clay writes that that the subjects Hazard wrote about will receive little attention until the slave trade question is settled. Clay argues that the best way to stop the slave trade is by creating strong colonies on the African coast: "I believe that they [the colonies] may be instrumental not only to abolish the slave trade, but ultimately, after the lapse of a great length of time, to separate the two races of the United States."
