Post-war, he was commandant of the Norfolk and New York Navy yards, commander of the Asiatic Squadron, governor of the Naval Asylum at Philadelphia, and superintendent of the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.

Includes a printed note on verso that the bill was read before the House 31 January 1876. Includes a handwritten note on verso, likely in Cox's hand, noting that the bill "Just passed 1 P.M. In order to write to Jeff Page (Confederate States Navy Commander Thomas Jefferson Page) in Buenos Aires, Maury must send the letter to England first since no steamers are running to Brazil. CSN Lt. William H. Murdaugh had lost an arm early in the war; he later served at the Norfolk ordnance yard.
