Comments that although he had predicted the telegraph would go around the world, he did not expect to live to see it happen. Title: Collection of David V. Smith, D company, 12th regiment, New Jersey, infantry [Decimalized .01-.60]

The correspondence of David V. R. Smith, a Private in the 12th New Jersey Volunteers, includes 59 war-date letters written to his wife, Elizabeth, and his son, Charles Carroll, from Elmer, Salem Co., NJ. Smith's regiment served mostly as pickets and guards. His letters detailed this constant and fatiguing duty. However, he did see battle in two major campaigns: Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Smith suffered from chronically swollen and painful legs which eventually killed him. His leg condition sent him to the hospital in August 1863 where he died on October 10, 1863 from his illness.…

Notes the arrival of the stone fleet, comprised by ships filled with stone, sand, and other heavy materials sent to blockade Charleston Harbor (page 13). Mentions other captains and steamers. Comments on the arrival of the Confederate ship Lady Davis (20 December), which remained beyond Union fire to observe events taking place in the harbor (page 27). Dreads their first Christmas apart. Co-signed by six field officers, including Brigadier General William Irvine of the 2nd Brigade of the Pennsylvania Line. The minutes of a council of war held during an attack on Bull's Ferry blockhouse. It appears that Knox wrote this on the verso of a letter he received from Captain Zebulon Pike while in the field. Says ammunition was nearly expended and even though artillery had made it within 60 or 70 yards of the blockhouse, it could not be captured and a withdraw was ordered. The attack at Bull's Ferry was a lopsided defeat, as Wayne's force of 2000 troops could not dislodge the 70…

An unidentified battery. A small squad of soldiers is lined up in front of a tent on the left side of the image holding what appears to be sabres at the position of salute. The battery is aligned in an open formation, battle position with limbers to the rear. A line of buildings is visible in the background. Inscription on verso: "oval cut 6 1/4 wide by about 3 high" and "Foux." Numeric notation on verso: "5134"; "V"; and "143663-1-175." Inscription on verso: "Unidentified battery." Thirty five men are posed in two lines, with one line standing and another kneeling in front. Ten others are visible in the background. The kneeling soldiers hold rifles and the insignia on their hats appears to indicate that they are either artillerymen or cavalrymen. They are posed under a makeshift canopy of tree boughs and leaves. The two officers stand just in front of the lines on the left side of the image. Two flags and a row of tents are visible behind the group and there are several tree stumps in the foreground. The man on the far left has a drum.
