At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The officers form a long line, wearing an assortment of uniforms and almost all have swords. Inscription on verso "Gardner." Numeric notation on verso: "VI" and "531."

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.
