Massachusetts regimental book regarding recruiting, movements, provisions, court martials, etc. The first 23.5 pages cover entries and accounts made by an unnamed leader of a regiment from Middleborough, Massachusetts, stationed mostly at Crown Point, New York in July-November 1761. Crown Point had been captured by the British in 1759, and since that time served as a defensive outpost. Various stereocard and other smaller photograph prints, most unmounted, relating to the Civil War in Virginia. The images come from Thomas G. Knight, who worked in Brady's studios (it is said) as a teenager. Included are images of Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Petersburg and various forts around Washington. Includes images of soldiers playing ball, some freedmen (unidentified location), Winfield Scott and battlefields with soldiers' remains (Fredericksburg - Marye's Heights; Gettysburg; trenches at Petersburg).

Shows the various buildings and structures in camp, including barracks, a sawmill, barns, and a steam furnace. The buildings are numbered and there is a corresponding legend on the verso. Drawn in pencil with a colored flag. The regiment operated from 1863-1865 in southwestern Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Indian Territory. Frank Hoyt enlisted as a private in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment in December 1863 and served until August 1865.

Writes to his father regarding activities of his regiment, his request for a furlough, and possible promotion. Says his regiment recently destroyed a railroad bridge. Their current encampment is "indeed a picture of desolation"; he hopes they will be leaving for Virginia soon. There is an upcoming election for a new Colonel, which he doubts he will win, but does not consider it impossible. Written at "Moseley Creek," eighteen miles south of Kinston, North Carolina.

One undated image entitled "Brady's Incidents of the War (General McClellan)," was taken by Mathew Brady. Image is of General Morrell's Brigade at Miner's Hill, Virginia. The men are gathered around a tree trunk. Those pictured include the aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Williams, a surgeon named Walters, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred V. Colburn, and Lieutenant Colonel N.B. Switzer. A note below the photograph reads, "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1861 by M.B. Brady, in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia."

Five of these letters are written to his sister, four are addressed to his mother, and two are written to both his parents. Josiah E. Henry enlisted on 27 August 1861 as a Private. He was mustered into Company I, 5th Regiment of the Vermont Cavalry on 16 September 1861. He reenlisted on 15 December 1863 and was finally mustered out on 10 July 1865.
